Is Coconut Oil the Secret to Longer Hair?

Posted by Dana Perez on October 25, 2013 at 12:30 AM Comments comments (3)

cocnut oil

If you suffer from dry hair, you know that this can lead to breakage which keeps your hair from growing its longest. While coconut oil will not make the hair grow faster, it can help with dry hair conditions so that hair does not break - and grows longer.

The reason that most moisturizing products will not actually help your dry hair condition is because they cannot actually penetrate the hair shaft. Most oils and moisturizers contain mineral oil or lanolin as the moisturizer. These products only coat your hair and provide the illusion of moisture with a temporary gloss.

Water based products can actually penetrate and moisturize well, but they can make relaxed or heat styled hair swell.

Virgin coconut oil is an effective moisturizer because it actually penetrates the hair shaft to moisturize the hair from within the strand. It also helps to prevent protein losses from the hair so that the hair is stronger and less vulnerable to breakage.

Coconut oil can be used as a pre-shampoo moisture treatment and as a daily moisturizer. It is important that you use Organic, Virgin Coconut Oil. This oil is not processed. It is solid at room temperature and turns into liquid at 76 degrees F.

While coconut oil can help dry hair, it's only a part of your healthy hair journey! Every healthy hair journey starts with a strong foundation.

Hair Health: How to Keep Your Edges Right

Posted by Dana Perez on January 4, 2013 at 11:30 PM Comments comments (0)

Some steps I would suggest to promote edge growth and whip your edges back into shape, include:

  1. Massage the area with oil to keep them moisturized. Our edges tend to be brittle so massaging will promote the hair follicles and a nourishing oil will keep our edges (and hair at the nape of the neck) from snapping.
  2. Keep a healthy diet. What we put in our bodies is reflected in our appearance, so doubling up on the veggies doesn’t hurt.
  3. When washing your hair, make sure to condition the edges as well as the length of your hair. Throw a little scalp massage in there for good measure.
  4. If your edges are unhealthy, you need to be extra careful with them at all times and that includes when styling and if you wear a relaxer. As tempting as it may be, if you do your own relaxer, don’t focus on the edges so much. Spread the message to your natural hair stylist as well. Although their goal is to give you the most salon-perfect style, healthy hair—and edges—are much more valuable in the long run.

Products to try for smooth edges. Try to use your fingers to apply these goodies and not too much brushing. Tie down with a scarf overnight (not too tight):

  • Organic Root Stimulator Olive Oil Edge Control Hair Gel
  • Castor oil
  • Shea butter
  • Carol’s Daughter Macadamia Hold & Control Smoother
  • Luster’s Renutrients Slick Stick

Virgin Hair:

Virgin  Hair is highly regarded in the hair industry because of its natural durability and flexibility blending with all hair textures. Virgin hair gives the best styling options for extensions and other uses because of its natural wave pattern.

Virgin  hair is cut from the donor the same as 'Remy' and the cuticles are still kept in the same direction, but there is no chemical processing at all. The hair is given to its new owner in the same exact condition it was when it left it donor. Don’t worry then hair has been cleaned and will be ready to perform and is usually freshly prepared when it is received.

Indian hair last 6 months - 1 year unlimited washes. Handled with care. Shampoo and conditioned and hang dry/air dry. (Use hooded dryer while hair is installed)

NAYAS INDIAN HAIR

Remy vs Remi

I've done the research! Remy(i) is a process that is done to virgin Indian hair. “Remi” is simply the Asian hair manufactures label for this type of hair and “Remy” is the Indian label for the same process. Once the hair is put into a ponytail and cut from its donor, the hair cuticle must be kept in the same direction to lessen tangles and to maintain the texture. Once the hair is put onto a weft, the hair is then processed for colors, straightening or curling.

100% Human hair/Remy(i) hair purchased in stores - 90% of all human hair including Remy(i) are of low quality, wiry and stiff hair, often mixed with animal or synthetic filler hair. The hair is chemically process to add texture and color. Hair sold at beauty supply stores last only for one service max two shampoos and need to be disposed of afterwards.

Hair purchased in stores last 1 -2 months with one to two washes each install and should be discarded at removal

Chris Brown's Concert 91711

When an event comes up the first thing I think about is SHOES; then a dress. I lucked up on these really cute find; a French Connection Cheetah Allover Sequin Dress. After I purchased my dress I searched the French Connection line to see what else they had to offer this season and instead found Nicky Hilton and Jamie King in MY “Chris Brown Dress”.

Being the girly girl that I am I explored many options before finally settled on the French Connection Dress. The next order of business was shoe options. I often get in my celebrity state of mind and refuse to wear thing in my closet and have to have new but I am normally unimpressed with shoe options in stores and will almost always opt to buy my JC’s and S. Eldeman’s online. I had too little time and fabulous shoe options right in my closet.

(left to right Nude Steve Madden $50.00, Neon Yellow ASOS $100, Brown ACNE $250.00)

My BFF and I decided to make a day of this CB event treating ourselves to Nails, Hair primping, Make up, dinner and the concert. Check out all our fun!

Color Blocking

Posted by Dana Perez on August 22, 2011 at 5:45 PM Comments comments (0)

One of my absolute favorite spring trends is color-blocking. What is color-blocking you ask? Quite literally it is wearing big blocks of color next to each other. Simple, right? Well not always. To interpret this trend right, you need to understand the basic principals of color theory. Step by Step photo guide below.

Client has a bold cut. With very short hair in the back.

But I can grip anything!

#1B has been to the rear of the head.

Second main color #33

Highlight added #30

All done! The concept of color blocking seems tacking but it comes out quite natural looking. Well when The Hair Wiz does it :)

Client was a little camera shy. No front facing images.
